my new self inflating pad came in today and luckily, it's a little chilly tonight. should i try it out in the hammock or the bivy? i think it'll rain tomorrow night, which is a better test for the bivy, so i'm leaning toward the hammock which is set up already anyway.

my new self inflating pad came in today... What one did you get? I love my Exped (not self inflating, but the pump works great, and it's insulated!)

it's alps mountaineering, which i hear is actually made by exped. mine's the comfort series regular, 1.5" thick with a brass valve, pvc dot bottom, and fake suede top.

Curious to know how you end up liking it, especially in a hammock.
(Which is one of the main reasons I got the Exped.)

do you top your off or just let it fill? it wasn't really filling up well out of the box so i closed the valve, rolled the air to the back, repeated, and topped it off hard. i was concerned about any memory effect so i left it fully inflated all day.

i expect this to be really good since the cheap blue pad has comfortably seen me through the night many times with the same hammock and bag i'm using tonight. i hope this is no less insulating and far more comfortable.
that's my real concern with the pad. insulation. doesn't really discuss that in the advertisement.

My mat doesn't have memory foam, but synthetic insulation. There is also a built in pump so I don't have to breathe in the thing to get it firm. The pump works great, but I keep it a bit soft, especially in a hammock since I don't need it for padding, just insulation (obviously). I also like that it folds down pretty dang small for backpacking. Check it out... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q61wnopqonA and... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpa9qNictSs
