It sounds like the smaller scope would be the best then, definitely made the right choice. as a sportsman, I wouldn't consider a shot on a game animal at 500 yds, even if I thought I could make the hit, just because the room for error is too great, and if I slip, that animal may end up bleeding to death somewhere in the woods, instead of a quick humane kill. Besides, no animal other than a man can kill me from several hundred yards away, lol.
personal choice for me on big game is 300 yards, shot a moose once at 580 yards (pace out) killed it but I wasn't happy with the performance of my 308. Decided then I would never do it again.
I rarely get the chance to practice beyond 300 yards anyways

Yeah, I don't hunt long range at all. For me...200yds and less for Deer (don't get a chance to hunt the big stuff). However, for Varmints...I'll stretch to 600+ (Hogs, Yotes, etc).

I have never taken a shot at a deer over abut 150 yards, rarely see them further then that here in BC.
Yotes are a different story, doesn't take much energy to put them down, if you can hit them clean, they go down

Wife's great uncle is a trapper, try to visit him a couple times of year and go out with him.
He uses an old 22-250 for most long range yote hunting

Love to get out hog hunting one year, they are becoming a problem in Alberta now. only a matter of time before the pests come out west. Hope they don't but I don't know if they can be contained

Where I deer hunt here, a 100 yd shot is rare. Fartherest I've ever shot a deer was 109 paces, most were inside 40 yards.

My Favorite .22 is the Izhmash Biathlon Basic. Crappy wood...but I could care less. Bed it and throw some camo on it! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> The actions are super smooth...and the rifles are extremely accurate. Plus...the cool factor of a toggle bolt, hehe.

Sent in the scope after I painted it to have Leupy drop in some M-1 turrets.

That's sweet! I love toggle actions. This could be a future rifle for me.

Afternoon RTH.

Yeah, the little Izhmash BB's are a hoot. They used to be decently priced...not sure what they run now.
