I'm sorry to hear that.
Most of the big newspapers and magazines had a "wait and see" attitude, as technological shifts were occurring. Their plan was to watch and see which ideas were promising, and buy those companies up, when they seemed worthy. The papers were taken by surprise when those companies, such as Google, Amazon, Yahoo, etc., rapidly became far more valuable than the newspapers, so the newspapers couldn't buy them.
And, as for the notion of those papers innovating for themselves, instead? Like you said, they were content. The newspaper model had been stable and profitable for more than 80 years, and they assumed it was timeless. Meanwhile, they placed incompetent boobs at the head of newspaper companies, due to family relations with the paper's founders.
When the tide of change came, they were completely unprepared to adapt.
