I have been thinking about attending a survival school to really get my skills tuned up do you guys have any suggestions? I will be taking a course for Wilderness emergencies, but was wondering if any of you have taken anything else?

All i've really looked into is the Boulder Outdoor Survival School (Pricey!!) and the Wilderness Medicine Institute (cool)

As I get older I regret not having served or even been in the Boy Scouts... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

I am aquiring tools but I needs some Skills!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif" alt="" />

Thanks

I'm guessing most of us haven't been to a non-military survival school. The only "formal" training I had was the Army and Boy scouts. I think I learned the most woodcraft from my Dad, Grandpa and Uncles growing up though.

What kind of survival skills are you looking to learn? My sister and her husband are both very much into primitive survival schools and have attended a couple gatherings and (maybe) schools to learn what they know. If you're interested in primitive survival skills I can get a hold of them and let you know their recommendation.

Thanks for the respones!

MB-You may be right, I really wish I had served and completed boy scouts!

dl351- I would love any recs for primitive skills schools. BOSS does provide these and i may go there...but any other suggestions would help.

Myke-I checked out the site, the trip looks awesome! Too bad I just missed the one that ended on Friday...maybe I do one soon though

Thanks again folks

Well, my brother in law said the only two he would go to are Boulder Outdoor Survival School in Boulder, Utah, and Wilderness Awareness School in Duvall, Wshington.

One thing he didn't mention is a primitive skills conference put on by Backtracks. I know he and my sister have both been to Rabbitstick (put on by Backtracks). You can check them out here:

http://www.backtracks.net/

I don't know if a conference with classes to sign up for is what you're looking for, but it's an option.

I would have to really think hard about giving BOSS any of my money. This sounds like poor training of the guides to me.

That sounds like Negligence to me. Where were the guides? Aren't they supposed to be watching out for signs of this sort of thing? My NCOs can do it while getting shot at, how come these guys couldn't do it during a hike?
