I have the mil-regualtor withthe soft sheath.

I am assuming the snap buckle part of the sheath is for a sharpening stone. What do you reccomend as the best stone to put into this sheath.

thanx

DMT Mini. These are small enough to fit two in there, probably. That would let you have a few different levels of grit. I suggest breaking the stone in first on a junk knife. These things have a real bite to them at first. Once broken in though, DMT stones are awesome. They are the longest lasting diamond stones I have come across.

I usually use a very fine ceramic stone to polish off the edge if I want to shave hairs with the knife.

But, it is debatable if this is the best way to keep an edge anyway. There are some out there (including me) who believe a slightly less polished edge acts as micro serrations and is more utilitarian. I have seen test of rope cutting where a knife that could shave took longer to go through a thick rope than the same model knife that couldn't shave. There are many many sites out there devoted to sharpening, even some pretty lengthy books.

Spyderco Double Stuff will fit the pocket I think. One of my favorite stones.

Hello there GH
I would second the diamond stones, but I plan to have my Regulator convexed soon so I will be carrying a small deal of sandpaper and leather.

Usually I'm the first to say DMT but truthfully diamonds really don't work that well on SR101. They are effective don't get me wrong on that there just not any better than sandpaper simply because the steel is not wear resistant enough to benefit from what the diamonds offer.

My suggestion would be a piece of 220 and 1k wet/dry glued to a cut down paint stick. This would give you the option of light touch up or damage repair.

It depends on what your sharpening. It seens at least to me that some knives(metals) will sharpen good with one stone and better with another and worse with some. A few good ones to try, DMT, Arkansas stones medium being the best for larger knives, Japanese Water stones around 1000 for larger knives, India stones and ceramic stones along the lines of the Spyderco medium grit.

Fine stones will provide a very keen edge however, the edge generally knocks down quickly and is diffucule to maintain in the field. If you feel the need for that level of sharpness then I would put it on a smaller knife like a good folder.

The medium grit stones provide a very agressive edge thats hard to beat for general cutting and chopping chores and requires less work and time to maintain.

JYD#14 Do you need one, of course you do it's a knife and you like knives.....

Treat your knife edge with care, or in other words stay as far away from carbide sharpeners as you can.

Here are my DMT stones and ceramic stone I will be carrying with my new Regulator. I agree that diamonds can be rough on SR101 steel, but the extra fine didn't seem to do anything but touch up the edge I put on my Regulator. I was able to get a mirror finish on my come-as-is edge in about 10 minutes with this set-up, plus my leather belt. I probably won't have to use the coarse or even the fine DMT unless I do some serious labor with this knife. Probably just some ceramic and x-fine DMT touch ups will do.

The stones fit all the way in the pouch with nothing hanging out. I feel confident they will not fall out.

The Arkansas stone and diamond sharpener may prove to be useful. But I wouldn't put that yellow contraption anywhere near anything but a pair a crappy scissors of beater blade. That thing won't have the same angles as your blade's edge.
