I was cleaning up my hard drive when I ran across a PDF of the SERE (Survival, Evasion, and Recovery) manual we used in the Jungle Warfare Training Center on Camp Gonzalves in Okinawa Japan. It is full of useful stuff about survival. Most of it is useful to civilians as well as military and all of it is useful to those preparing for the end of the world types like Horn Dog. I posted it on a scrap page of my personal website and don't plan to take it down so you can come back to it when you feel like it or download it, but the page is not normally visible to site traffic. So, you'll have to use this link. If you have issues with paintings of nude women, don't scroll down on the page. http://jarheadjournalism.com/index.php?p=1_9_PaintingsFeel free to download it as it is not a classified or sensitive document. (I checked)

Thanks for the info JJ. BTW, when did they stop calling it SERE (Survival Evasion Resistance and Escape)?

It all depends on which branch of service you are in. But, technically, the DOD has always called it what I called it.
That manual really has some great info in it; shelters, how to test plants for edibility, using plants as medicine the list goes on. It is the ultimate survivors guide, but isn't really designed to be used alone. It is supposed to be part of the course, which isn't fun. I still think it is better than any survivor how to book I have read.

rth, I think that is a better survival manual than 99 percent of the books for sale. Read through it and let me know what you think...

FYI the individual military services put forth SERE curriculum approved by the Joint Personnel Recovery Agency or JPRA at Joint Forces Command (JFCOM). They are not operating on their own program. Here is a fact sheet: http://www.jfcom.mil/about/facts_prt/JPRA.pdfUnless things have changed the USMC Course at Camp Gonzalves IIRC was approved to teach everything but the "resistance" part. IMHO the USMC flipping the Escape versus Evasion was probably a typo or it was printed then the doctrine changed. Either way awesome resource and thanks for posting it! -Stan

My Army Aviation unit still ships pilots out to SERE school, although there are three levels of course, SERE 1 which is an online course, SERE 2 which is a 1 day course with only a little hands on training, and SERE 3 which is mandatory for pilots, 1 week spent implementing everything you've learned in a simulated training environment.
Supposedly they give you a rabbit, and you have to keep it like a pet for a few days, then they instruct you to kill and eat it. Shock value I guess. I've also heard they're allowed to break small bones in your hands and such during the "interrogations"

"So, you'll have to use this link. If you have issues with paintings of nude women, don't scroll down on the page." However, I am curious, not judgmental, do you allow your daughter to visit fine art museums?
