I have had gerber multitools for years now. Can't remember exactly how long I have been carrying them actually.

i have found that the latest ones seem weaker than the older ones. The flat blade screw driver bit torqued the first time I used it on a new one! Seemed WAY too soft.

On a separate note, what other kershaws were at the store? They do have some nice blades. I have a speed bump that I quite like!

I have the: Gerber Multi-Plier® 800 Legend™

Its got pot metal handles, and brittle tools. Design is quite nice, quality is subpar. The replaceable wire cutters and carbon tipped saw thing are great features. But don't do too much "pliering" with it, or the handles (made of "lightweigh aerospace material" = potmetal) will get sprung!

This is the one here: http://www.gerberstore.com/index.php?xpage=itempage&xid=411

Yeah, they don't list the one I had. Be careful with the replaceable saw as well. The retaining lock on it broke on my last one... Ended up using a large object to finish the cut.

i was going to suggest a leatherman if you weren't pleased with the knives. the storm 2 is a great knife, made in the usa. can't go wrong with the 110 or 119, either.

+1 on the SAK and 119. I think you did good with the leatherman. Even if he doesn't carry it, it would be handy for the car or home.

The SAK is so innocuous in public it almost isn't a knife. No one raises an eyebrow when they see one which makes it an easy edc even if he's not into knives. The 119 would not be as sheeple friendly, but I just like those old lockbacks and Buck will refinish it like new in 10 years time if need be.

I used to carry a Gerber multi tool - the expensive one ($90?) and it was a piece of garbage... Handles sprung right away, a flathead screwdriver broke right off during normal use... Leatherman is the way to go!
I have the el cheapo Leatherman Kick. It is a great handy tool around the home or anywhere else. I am so impressed with the quality, that I am going to get one of their better ones.

SAK was good enough for MacGyver. What did he carry? A Tinker?

The Wave is a good choice. I was going to get one, but decided on the Titanium Charge instead. It’s identical to the Wave, except upgraded slightly. It has titanium scales on the handle, the blade is a better steel, and it has bronze bushings so the tools don’t clump together when you try to open one of the tools. Since it would be something I carried every day, I wanted to spend a little more and get the nicer one. I bought mine on eBay, and it cost less than the Wave you paid full price for at Walmart. I think I paid around $50 for it. I also bought the extra bit kit with it for more versatility.

I had one which i have since gifted but I was quite impressed with it....
Lots of lockable blades (i don't really know what steel it's made of)...
I've also heard good things about the SOG Powerlocks....

Did he have a SAK? That makes sense, but I only remember how he shook his hand everytime he punched somebody...and Terri Hatcher.
