I'll be doing a 81 miler this summer with a 40 in the New Mexico mountains.

What did you mean by a lat cable?

Nautilus cable pull down bar thingy. Not sure of the proper name.

Alright, I picked up on the go faster part last time I ran, I only do my running after about 1.5 hours of racquetball (hard sprints) so I usually try to run about a 10 minute mile or slightly under. I picked up for the last quarter mile just because I couldn't breathe and needed to get it over with.

Oh, I know what you're talking about with the pull down bar. At body weight or less? Also, I don't have access to a gym except over the summer.

Also, will being on the football team help my being in shape for the Marines?

Weight training will help a lot with pullups too. I was stuck at 17 pullups (20 gets a perfect score on the pull up test) until I started hitting the gym/weights religiously. I can do 32 now.

I weigh 145#, am 5'10". I run my three miles test in under 18 minutes, which is a perfect score. I also max out the situps at 100 in two minutes. This is why I suggest slimming down. Get lean. I have seen too many big jock who used to be the high school football star fall out of hikes and do poorly on physical fitness test.

Well I can't say I'm in the best shape myself but one thing I had a question about. The "stitches" overkill talked about, are those the sharp pains that kinda feel like your being stabbed? Back when I did run I remember these in the beginningbut IIRC they went away the more in shape I became.

So I guess my question is why do they happen or what causes it besides just not being in shape. I have been wanting to get back into running but its literally been years, any tips so I don't hurt myself or so I can make the best of my runs?

Alright. I could probably do about 75-80 situps in two minutes as I think I'm slightly over a minute for 50.

I think that I'm going to be stuck being a bigger guy in terms of stature (My grandfather on my mom's side was a weightlifter and has the build to suit, my dad has some Scottish Highlands ancestry to add to that.

Get a set of powerbands. I use them in my home gym. Do sets of pullups. Each set do as many as you can making sure your chin goes over the bar at the top and you elbows lock out at the bottom. Rest between each set for 3-4 minutes. Then repeat. When you can't do any more pull ups even after a good 3-4 minutes rest, do pulldowns. Obviously, it will have to be lighter than you.

Side stitches are from your diaphragm and lateral obliques cramping from the sustained exertion of running and breathing heavily. There are only a few ways to help with that. Run. Side bends. I use a tilted bench thingy and hold a 45 pound plate and do side bends.

You won't hurt yourself if you push past the stitches. Your body will stop you from running before that happens. Accept the pain on a run until you can't.
