For me I think it mostly habit. I got my first knife I think in the 3rd grade and have been sharpening (or at least trying to)them ever since. Conventional V grind is what I am used to and can do by sound and feel alone. I am almost 100 percent sure I will eventually put a V grind on it and make the choil a little larger (longer?)

War Dog was the first knife I had that had a convex edge. Not for long...
Now, can you explain me in what kind of task or duty you´ll need a choil for?

T1, no I can not. I just like the ability to choke up with my thumb in front of the handle and my index finger the same way sometimes. No logical reason, just that I like that option.

That being said, I DO think that on a big chopper having the ability to wrap your index finger around in front of the handle an be an advantage to keep it from slipping out of your hand, and it will change the balance a lot more than one would think, at least on a big blade.

If you mean what is it, it is the unsharpened area of the blade directly in front of the handle. On scrapyard knives now it is just a more or less square cut area that is not sharpened. on the WarDog it is that little circular area just in front of the handle and before the actual cutting edge begins.

t1m0, I believe if its not sharp after the sandpaper/mousepad treatment you were maybe pressing too hard. This rounds the edge. Try going softer and then use a strop after you're done.

Thank you Skunk! That was a good try but I still don´t understand the choils. Handles are for gripping and blades are for cutting. At least that´s what I think. I do know the meaning of the choil but I just don´t understand it...
Good night!

Monster Dog, I have heard folks say when using the Sandpaper/mousepad to ONLY use the weight of the blade. Maybe that's what I am doing wrong as well. Oh well, no matter I plan on making it MINE anyway. Conventional V Grind and a lengthening of the Choil and I am going to round off the end of the handle some as well I think.
Citizens, it is nite nite time for me as well. If you're up I'll see Y'all on the other side of midnight.
