I've had good service out of my Sharpmaker, but sometimes it just won't cut it. Pun intended. I feel like I really NEED a coarse stone, either Arkansas stone or diamond.

It will cost more, but go with the diamond. The 6 inch Smith's coarse stone I have had for going on 15 years and it's still going strong.

The ones I linked to are cheap enough to try without breaking the back

MANY folks tout the DMT brand as being the gold standard for diamond hones.

Never tried them, but I remember he has them and he's cheap on everything else

one of the things I like about that DMT setup is you get the holder as well. Keeps the stones about 2 inches off the surface PLUS there is like a handle on the back side as well so you can move the hone across the steel if you've got a really large blade.

Dad has a really old Arkansas stone in a wood holder that I love. I never was very good at freehanding, but I'm getting better at it lately. My stones are waaay too hard to cut though, they're more like hones. But once I get an edge on something, look out!

Didn't know they also had a handle, but I like their holders for the stones.

To me the holder is a good selling point.
