Diceman,

How many RD's do you have? I remember a chop off you did between a DF and RD-9.
How well do they hold up with your hands on testing etc, etc.???

Russmo - I've got an RD4/7/9 (the 9 is a recurve, the 4 is slightly recurved). I've done some chopping with the RD9 - its not as forgiving on the hands as the Dogfather is. Its very sharp and easy to sharpen, and clears brush quite well - I was pretty surprised. The RD7 has been a good knife. It is balanced well, the Grip is perfect for a midsized knife, I like Justin's Micarta a lot, and I've been able to do quite a few little mods of my own to it (blued it, added spacers to the micarta grips, and cordwrapped it today - I just redid it again actually) - its been a fun knife so far. Its also very, very sharp, and since my RD4 and RD9 have a recurved shape, the RD7 is the only one that I've been able to strop - and it takes on a phenomenal edge. The RD4 is a whole lot of knife in a 4" package. Its very heavy and stout, and slices quite well for a 1/4" thick knife. Since the blade is so wide, it has a relatively thin edge (as compared to the Dumpster Mutt) which is quite nice. Check out the Ranger forum over on KnifeForums - I've written my comments over there quite a bit as well. Edge retention on all of them is quite good. Scrapyard and Ranger / Dan and Justin are my 2 favorite knife companies/makers.

Andy - that dart looks cool.

I've also been thinking about Justin's 3/8" Airbone Ranger Assault Knife - looks like a beast!!

diceman:

These two pics show the grip I used. I am no expert knife thrower so this may be wrong but it works for me. I made sure I extended my arm completely while doing this. And I varied my distance a little but not enough to say I am comfortable at several ranges. That just means I need more practice. Oh darn.

I'll have to check on the # of rotations and get back to you.

Have you tried "spear" throwing without any rotation of the knife?

I played around throwing my dog father one day. I was impressed at how much it dug into wood even when thrown softly!

DN - Fantastic - thanks for the pix brother! I'm pretty excited to try it out tomorrow. I did find that when I held lower to the pommel that I was getting better sticks.

I really like that Natural Outlaw too - my Badger is on the way - but its only 3/16" vs. your .25". Think the INFI will take the abuse, even in 3/16"?

I did that a little bit today. Then I was just releasing the blade tip up and letting it get about 1/4 turn in before it stuck - I was only about 8-10 feet from the target though. I've got a lot of practice ahead of me to figure this out!

One of the books I have describe custom throwers for spear throwing where you weight the back of the knife... I should dig that out. Justin's blades seem well suited since you can easily pull the micarta off!

Yeah. I threw the RD4 a little, knocked the G10 off center, had a heck of a time getting the handles off, then stripped one of the brass fittings putting it back together. Ended up being able to back off the other side and then catch some threads. So I called Justin and asked him to send me a couple fittings and bolts. Then I took the RD7 out, threw it a couple of times, had a bad hit, and popped a bolt clean out! Good thing I have a couple on the way.

After all of that, I decided to cord wrap!!

That makes sense. I don't want to hurt the handles!

you need a blue cord wrap.
