Its easy to spot once you figure out what you are looking for. If you are in a wet part of NC find some moss covered pine that is solid and its likely to be fatwood. If you are in a dry part it will look very weathered and the grain will be visible. I will see if I have some photos.

I'll carry some ziplock bags and see if I can collect some when I'm out this week.

Here is some from the roots of an old stump. Not the best fatwood but pretty good. I spotted this one from about 70 yards away. The whole stump is fatwood and would be enough to last me a lifetime. This is just a small root from it. The wood is hard as the dickens.

Ok, now I kinda know what to be looking for. I'll see what I can find this week and next. Thanks for the photos so I'll have an idea of what I'm doing.

It can look very different but most of it here looks similar. It is dry here and fatwood is abundant. The one thing you will notice is it will be heavier than it looks. Once you take a slice out if it you will know by the smell. Bring a small saw it will make your life much easier to harvest it.

I think I've found it before, very "resiny" if I had the right stuff.
