I still carry sterilization tablets for back up, but I think it is best to take things out of the water instead of putting things in like bleach.

I agree. But I ment that IF you filter or perfilter the water to get out "the gunk" why is everyone so hyped on the steripen instead of plain old easy to find, non battery dependent bleach?

One: Who wants to drink bleach?

Two: It works faster than bleach. Bleach wait time = 30 minutes. Steripen wait time = 1.5 minutes, less if the lamp was just used and still warm. It will automatically shorten the timer for you.

Three: It is just cool to sterilize water with UV radiation. It satiates the geek in me.

Ok, Your reasons are the ones I thought. I just wanted to know what someone else thought. Sometimes My way of thinking is a little strange. Patty tells me it is all the time. And she is right a lot of the time.

I don't see me picking one of these up for my bag. It seems like something I would use on day hikes when I just wonder aimlessly through the woods with out keep track of where I am going.

I will stick with my eTrex Gps. Not much bigger, way more usefull (maps and turn by turn for when I am on a bicycle.

As for use as a compass, I like the clear Brunton maps compasses. They work as a hand held compass and are perfect for laying on a map.

I think something like that would work for me. Not so much for following a compass bearing, but to find my way back to where I started from.

That is exactly what it is perfect for. A little big for a keychain, maybe they'll shrink it in future versions, but I can see that being the perfect keychain for a person who forgets where they parked. Like me.

Also, great for those day hikes I was talking about when 3 waypoints is more than you need.

Amazon has the Backtracks for $42 depending on the color you pick. They even have pink for you and camo for me.

GPS units..... Ok, I know that tom tom and other vehicle units can have the entire U.S. road system in them. Do any HAANDHELD GPS units have the entire U.S. built into them? I know this a a vague question but maybe you know what I mean. No wait, IF it did you would still need to have the lat/long of your destination wouldn't you?
