Hey all you Dog-users out there, has anyone tried some cutting that would test edge holding? Cardboard, rope, cinderblocks, anything?

Also, Dan/Patti, with the changes to S7's chemistry and heat treat that have been espoused here, what kind of edge retention can all us dogs expect, relative to A2, SR101, or INFI?

I absolutely love this company by the way, practical knives with emphasis on performance over looks are EXACTLY what I've been looking for! Kudos to you two, and please don't go upmarket or play supply games with us like Swamp Rat. I can't wait 3 months for a knife!

Great question on the steel mods -- and as far as playing supply games go, AMEN TO THAT!!! Hopefully everyone in retail takes a lesson from those guys in terms of how not to run a business. Let's see some new products, whether they are paint scrapers or bread knives, hopefully something is already on the way!

I'm working it. I had not idea that there were so many other who thought the way I do ---"Performance before beauty"

You can almost imagine the conversations that I have with the head HOG.

Keep the faith

Dan

Well Dan, we realize that you had no choice in picking your brother. However, you DO have the voice to decide the next model released - please make it a BOWIE!

The creation of Scrap Yard knives serves to split off some demand from Swamp Rat, who until the change was trying to produce 2 lines of knives (micarta & ResC) The ever increasing demand was causing wait times to get ridiculous, and people complained. (the same thing happened with Busse Combat, and a similar protocol of releasing fewer models at a time to hold back wait times was created. Now there are less choices but you don’t have to wait. Now Scrap Yard has basically the same system in place as Swamp Rat. The reason there was a gap with no models available from Swamp Rat, was they were getting caught up with previous orders before releasing new models.
As far as Swamp Rat being “up market”, I have no idea what you mean. Their pricing has not drastically increased. If you mean the secondary market, realize that they have nothing to do with setting prices for resale. The supply games you mention simply do not exist. Busse changed the system and created a cool new company in order to get knives to people faster.

The only game they are playing is trying to match demand with production.
This demand has easily doubled since I discovered Swamp Rat. (as a result wait times did too) The big picture is that all three companies are a family affair, and they are doing a good job of not cutting corners to get knives made. If you are too impatient to wait “two weeks” now and then, you can go and buy some lesser knives and get them quickly.

Or you can go buy a Randall and wait 4 or more years. (the direction Busse & Swamp Rat were heading when they offered full lines of knives) I very much prefer the new system.

I just wanted to say how inspiring this is to hear. It seems like there is so much emphasis on "fit & finish" that performance is almost not an issue with many makers. I guess it really doesn't matter if the knives are destined to sit in a safe or behind glass -- the blades might as well be 420j2 or gold or whatever. personally i have always thought of "fit & finish" as being a distraction. I love the description of the blades being "a whole lotta ugly", but extreme performers. To hear a highly reputable knife maker say things like that is a dream come true, i'm sure for a lot of us. Grind on, brother!

We need a 5/16" (or thicker) SR-77 BOWIE!!! (Written back in early '07 -- Regulator Premonition?)
