I got myself a spyderco sharpmaker, I really wanted to work on sharpening my knives without power, in case I ever need to, I'll tell you this much, takes a heck of a lot longer that way

Yup it sure does. I don't know about the sharp maker, but with my hones I can tell if I've got the angle right just by the sound and the way the steel feels as it glides across the hone.

He hasn't been to bad, I keep him in a fenced in area ( inside) which helps me keep an eye on him and keeps him from destroying anything

I figured for the price ( about 40 bucks) it was worth a go, pretty good so far, I may need yo get the diamond rods for it so I can reprofile a few blades, but im liking it, just slow going

Diamonds are the way to go I think. My "Kit consists of a 6 inch Smiths course hone (325 grit), a Spyderco medium ceramic 8 inch hone, a DMT diafold, one in course and one in fine and a round rod for serrations. I don't sharpen to a Razor edge, for me a more sturdy edge works and is what I am used to. I NORMALLY don't sharpen to the "Burr" but can if I need or just want to.

The sharp maker ccame with a medium and fine grit ceramic stones, I'm going to get the ultra fine and diamond rods at some point
