I love my Muk and not for skinning. It is a great all purpose blade, amazing what it can do.

And to think I passed it up when it first came out. "noway I will use a knife like that" Ended up having to get one off the Ex.

Yep...help me out with specifics. I was too late on the original offer as well, but have remained curious as to how to take advantage of the blade design.

FC...help walk me through how you clean out a deer with the MUK. I'm confused by how you use the knife and control the blade to get the job done. I see how it works for skinning...but for gutting / deboning, I'm having a hard time following how one would hold the blade, etc. Thanks!

I clean them lots of different ways depending on the terrain, weather, and how far I am away from a vehicle, basicly though if you look good at the muk design that rear hump enables extra reach, by 2 inchs at least, combine the res c grip and you still have a very secure hold on your blade.. Other grips I use is my middle finger hooked in the choil area and index controlling the tip, and the with the nice "U" shape of the blade, I can gain very fine control by using that portion for my grip... For bones I use the tip to gain entrance I rotate the knife so the edge is up and use the spine to pry, which with it's taper slides nicely in between joints and offers enough toughness to "pop" them, then the blade edge finishs the cut

FC, IF I am thinking correctly, when you Pop the joints, the edge as you said enters the area bewteen the joints and it more or less stays stationary while the spine side is the one that has the most movement, back and forth? Is this sorta what you mean.

This is just hard for me to visualize...as I've always used drop points for cleaning deer. I keep my index along the spine whereby the blade actually acts as an extension of my finger...2.5-4" blades. Reading your comments makes me think that my perspective is limited to white-tail sized game, as I've not ever shot a mule deer, elk, moose, etc. As an example, I don't "pop joints"...I slice through the cartilage and carefully slice the tendons, letting the hams just fall out with little effort.

Interesting conversation

Ishi That part about Popping the joints has got me confused as well. I have done it like the way you stated.

Thanks for the write up!

I used a S5LE to dress out two mule deer last weekend. Except for the very tip, the S5LE seemed sharp after both. I did not touch up between bucks either.

Oh, I "pop" the joints too. It was the way I was taught.
