Yes, I just ordered my sword.... Now I have to figure out what I am going to carry it in. I did a search on this forum but did not find anything on the subject. I would love to see what people are using.

You could try and old sock but I don't think it would work very well. I would suggest contacting one of the sheath makers here and seeing what they could do for you.
Now you're not going to pick one up for 5 or 10 dollars, but they WILL last you for as long as you will be able to use it and they are all good guys to work with.

I've made a few, here's what mine is in. A machete sheath make a good, but loose temporary sheath. There's several good Busse kin sheath makers around that would be glad to help. I'll be more than happy to help if I can, but there's a bit of a wait, these guys keep me busy...

jeff, why do you insist on making your sheath nicer than your sword?

I have one of Welke's sheaths for my Waki and it is very nice. I saw a Waki sheath that Jeff made for a fellow board member and I was blown away with the leather work. I have not got a sheath for my Skizzy yet but I one is needed soon.

Great alternatives, thanks for sharing.
I actually plan to carry mine with me in the dog park fairly regularly, 12 acres, surrounded by 100 or so acres of woods. It is not convenient to carry a Scythe with me all the time and the blackberry and poison ivy will grow up ones legs if one holds still for long...The coyotes are getting bold and showing up in broad daylight too, killed a neighbor's dog and went after another neighbor's dog when they were walking in the woods. It makes people a little nervous if I carry a shotgun or rifle...
I'm not sure how to carry something that long though. It might be more practical to have it on the back instead of the waist. Has anyone played around with how to carry one of these?

Back carry is not convenient. Almost no one in history carried swords on their back. Movies and books don't count. It's almost impossible to resheath once you draw it and if it's a long sword, you better have really long arms to draw it in the first place. There were a few groups of SE Asians that had short swords strapped to their back historically, but they are the only ones I'm aware of. No, they were not ninjas either.

I almost want to get a scizzy just I get the sheath in Jeff's pic.
I bet that one would work good with sort of quick attachment. In fact fact I have an idea! too bad I don't have a scizzy in need.

I have to admit that I'm not sure of the practicality of a over the shoulder carry sheath for most applications. It's probably more of a convenience. If it can be rotated to the front for re-sheathing it's pretty handy I guess. History does back up Ted's observations.
Having said all that, the vast majority of sword sheaths I make are for over the shoulder, across the back carry.

Or maybe books too. It drives me nuts when they are going into battle with a 4' sword strapped to their back and the writer has them draw it with no problems at all. Across the back carry would probably be fine nowadays since you don't have to be concerned about having to draw it quickly, but I still don't like it as an option. I'd rather have a baldric that facilitates easily putting it on and off, but still allows easy access to drawing and re-sheathing the blade.

I probably should clarify that most of the sword sheaths that are requested/ordered are for shoulder carry.
The Baldric does seem more practical in most cases.
