While cool...I'm not sure what this is good for...

I know this is re-de-railing the conversation, buuut as a lowly chair-born ranger, I just have say that the above AF cammo pattern (thankfully) never made it to market in that condition. The current digi-tiger-stripe pattern is actually not so bad for urban environments, or even arid ones when dirty (what's that?) but the material and cut of the ABU is absolutely horrendous. So bad in fact that the AF is following suit with Army and issuing lighter weight Multicam to those deployed to Afghanistan, and with the rumor-mill saying we will go 100% multicam w/in 2-3 years (I won't hold my breath).

Lemme tell you guys something about the ACU...

Ever looked at 2 soldiers, one wearing BDUs and the other ACUs, at night? The guy in ACUs positively glows, and the guy in BDUs completely disappears.

The principle behind the ACU universal pattern was this:

Standing against a green background, the wearer would look more green.
Against a tan background, the wearer would look more tan.
And against a grey background (i.e. buildings), appear more grey.

However, the way it actually works is thus:

Against a green background, the user appears more Tan,
Against a tan background, the user appears Green,
and against a grey background, the user actually appears blue-ish (no joke) at certain times of the day, and otherwise appears very very tan.

Bottom line, the ACU doesn't do what it is supposed to do. the principal behind it was sound, but the execution was wrong.

It is also the shortest lived camouflage uniform ever to see general issue, I believe. See what happens when palms get greased?

And from what I understand, it doesn't matter what color your uniform is in afghanistan, it'll be sand colored by the end of the first week

Wow!!!

That's really amazing! Both the level of sharpness your got and the great even finish with the perfect grind line. Awesome work!

What was your set up? I mean, sandpaper over a hard or soft backing? How do you hold the sandpaper in place?

Thanks a lot in advance for your help!

Woodlander, I am probably speaking out of turn here , and for that I apologize to WN but I have heard the folks talk about getting sticky back sandpaper and attaching it to a mouse pad. They say you don't apply any pressure (unless it is a really light blade) then just enough pressure to get it to cut.

Someone with experience with this method should explain better when they read your question. I have never done this method myself.

Whelen Nut,
Sorry to have missed your post earlier. Anyway, that SOD looks great, and David does make some very nice kydex. So what age and subject do you teach?
