I put a lot more ammo through my .22 rifles than my center fire rifles. Both my Ruger 10/22 and Marlin 39a are fantastic shooters. I have Leupold 2x7 rimfire scopes on both. The 39a will shot everything from subsonic .22 shorts (that sound like a pellet gun) to CCI stingers. I’ll work on posting some pictures.

My favorite 22lr pistol is my Kadet unit on my custom cz sp-01. I may even have a rail for it, I like letting new shooters use a red dot sight. Extremely accurate and reliable and good training.

I have an airsoft p226 x5 open. It is a blowback pistol with an identical operation as the sp01. Without the rail (which I want to try on the kadet), compensator, and mag funnel the weight and size are really close. The mags can hold the same # of rounds as the 9mm and since the co2 is in the magi I can also practice mag changes. I just need to clean out the garage and have the 2yr old away for an afternoon to try it out.
my oldest daughter's boyfriend has airsoft guns that cost as much as some of my rifles
he loves them

I like air guns for a few reasons. They are pretty inexpensive, or can be. The two pellet pump pistols, 400fps and upto 600, really only cost a tin of pellet. These two seem very accurate so precise shots are easily possible. They have single shot operation with essentially no recoil and little noise. This combination is ideal for giving starting shooters a cheap, convenient (on the backyard or garage), and non-intimidating introduction to the fun of shooting.

I've been able to get a few non-gunners to have some fun killing icecubes and tin cans, something I wouldn't be able to do even with a single-shot 22lr. The blow-back, repeating airsoft is a nice next small step up.

just pulled out and disassembled my 10/22 trigger group. I think I'm going to do the auto bolt release mod and see if I can do a bit of a trigger job. Maybe sometime this weekend...

looks easy enough. but I wonder how many people say that just before they loose a limb or two?

anybody else tried these mods?

Auto bolt release mod is easy. Go slow and test fit a little at a time. If you mess it up the rifle will still fire and you can buy a Volquartzen part to do what you want. Its a win win.

For a trigger job I highly recommend you just install a Volquartzen hammer. It usually drops the trigger pull down to 3.5-4 lbs.

started on auto bolt but still didn't get it rounded off yet. busy week so maybe next week. I'm actually just glad the bolt hold will drop when I hit the button. River overbuilt that piece for sure.

the hammer does sound like the right way to go for the trigger job. and its cheap enough as well. I doubt this 10/22 will be my "nice" .22 but I want to upgrade it some. I would like to have another with all the fancy stuff. threaded bull barrel, scope with nice mounts, hogue stock, bipod, etc... I would like to even have a couple for the aluminum mags for something like that. I guess I can see now how guys end up with $1k+ in a $180 rifle. At least the ammo is cheap...

I actually took the trigger apart and put it back together without any tutorials.. just a thing I like to do. so dont ever ask me to put together any furniture for you. but I guess I'm trying to warm up to some more significant mods on other firearms. hopefully I will leave the right stuff to the smiths but I'm thinking a few builds could be the way to go in the future. best to tinker with a 10/22 and work my way up. yet another reason .22lr firearms are so cool.

Anybody have any experience with the Marlin 795?
On sale locally and hard to pass up.
Throw this under the back seat of the truck and forget about it.
If it's inaccurate I won't bother.
Thanks, Fred

44fred, I don't know about that model, but Sumo is big into firearms and he speaks well of the Marlin Papoose, a take down that comes in it's own soft case.

nutnfancy did a few videos speaking pretty highly of marlin 22lr rifles. he used a few specific models but I think his comments may have spoken to marlin 22 rifles in general.

at that price it it looks like a good deal to me.

I just bought 2 Marlin 795s. One for my nephew and one as a loner for some Appleseed shooting I am getting involved in (www.rwva.org). Initial test show it to be reliable and plenty accurate. If you like the feel and the features it is well worth the money. I also believe Marlin still has a $25 mail in rebate on them.

Hopping in this thread without reading everything. I have a happy story and a sad story. When I was a senior in high school I was deciding what gun I should get and was talked into getting a Ruger 10/22. I love that thing and it has been used for many a fun day of plinking. The sad story: While I was debating which gun to get, I went with the 10/22, right? Right. The other gun I was considering was the winchester ranch hand. It's a .44 mag lever action with an 18 1/2 in. barrel. I was talked into getting the 10/22 because it would be cheaper to buy and to shoot. I could always get the Winchester later. WRONG! A little later, Winchester was bought out and the prices shot up. I really enjoy the 10/22, but wish I had gotten the Ranch Hand. I also have a 22lr pistol that is bolt action single shot with an 8 in. barrel +-. That is fun. Not too reliable though.
