ECF, this might work for your "shelter".
take some 2x2 and cut them to fit the stake holes in your bed rails. IN THE FRONT next to the cab, take another (2x2 maybe) and nail or screw to the stake hole boards. forming a brace as it were from one side of the truck to the other. Then you drape the tarp over and then UNDER this "Brace" and lower it into the stake holes (you could also use some Velcro to attach the tarp to the brace)and this would help any moisture to roll off the front and not get into the bed. Then do basically the same thing for the back of the bed but with taller uprights. This would in effect give you a lean to in the back of your truck without having to use any para cord. You could even make side "braces" to go from the front to the back on each side as well. And if your tarp was long enough you could let it hang down below the tailgate and provide a flap.
Hope my explanation is clear enough for you to understand. I have a hard time getting my ideas across some. That sounds like a project for my next free weekend! I think I got the idea of what you meant, Randy. I definitely need a tarp for the bed, so I might take a crack at it.

Awesome! I wish I could figure out a way to make money and be close to family while living in CO. It's just an awesome place!! That...or WY.
ECF...please be careful with Scrappy...I fear my wife may steal him from you (she thinks he's so cute ) If he winds up missing...we know who to interrogate
I didn't see any pictures of the firepower...but I know it was there I'll keep a careful eye on Scrappy, thanks for the heads up! I was humping my 1911 in a Serpa holster for my first line, and I had my Arsenal SGL-21 in the truch nearby with a spare mag on the buttstock. If the SHTF, I had my body armor in the truck as well with 2 additional mags (it's got my hydration system on it, with 100 oz of emergency water. That's why I brought it along, I promise!) I did have an old futon mattress laid down in the back of the truck, and with the Coleman sleeping bags I have, and the 8 lb mobile heater... I mean the dog... It was actually quite comfortable. I placed an emergency space blanket in the foot end of the sleeping bags near the tailgate. I did park on a slight hill, so I ended up sliding to one side of the bed during the night.

Looks like you had a great time. I camp in my truck sometimes, but I cheat and use a camper cover and an air mattress. I cheat and use the inside of my landcruiser If the back of my Explorer would lay flat I would use it too. But it don't, and I can't sleep in the front seat laid back. I had 1994 explorer and used to sleep in the back of it just fine (used an air mattress). I have a canopy on my pick-up which I use if I sleep in it, but many a night was spent in the back of my old pick-up sleeping under a tarp. I used a system for the tarp that sounds similar to what Randy was talking about. I will have to see if my wife has any pictures of it

I love my Rocky Mountains. Those peaks you see in the panoramic view are way south of where I was (I was about 3 miles from NORAD at the time, I could see the towers on the next peak), I plan on hitting that stretch of peaks sometime this summer.
