Hello Richard, welcome to the Yard. I am still trying to convince myself to get a variable speed grinder and some wheels. Like Myke, I have limited space so this might b a good option.

check with your local furnace and air comditioning business for used belt drive squirrel cage blowers. sometimes they have 1/2 hp motors that are still good and work fine. a 1/3 or 1/4 hp motor do not have enough power and will stop with little pressure.
the variable speed motor at lowes would be the best choice unless you can find a 1/2 hp motor at a cheaper price or free.
if your appartment has a small balcony with a railing you can make a table that attaches to the railing easy enough that will hold the motor.

Great idea Richard, I will have to look into the motor. I was thinking of just C clamping the device to the table then removing it when not in use.

Those paper wheels really look interesting, and it looks like they do a nice job with the operator doing things right. As many folks here on this forum could probably use a little help in sharpening knives - like ME! - perhaps you should start a paper wheel sharpening thread. Just be courteous enough to use Bussekin knives!
