I've seen very few yard or swamp knives that I haven't wanted <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

So what do you use to sharpen the Hook and Guard?

The YardHook is on my list to buy knives.
I think some people have modified the hook slightly to use as a bottle opener

I didn't have to modify my hook to open bottles, it works fine as is. It doesn't leverage the cap like a real bottle opener though, so I find I have to lift several flutes of the cap before it will pop off. It will definitely get the job done though!

I try and keep mine honed with an Oval Ceramic rod, the recurve edge makes it very difficult to sharpen on a flat stone. I think the easiest way would be a belt sander or the paper wheel trick, something with some give so that it follows the curve of the edge. The rod takes a lot of practice and patience, unfortunately. I find the yardhook requires my full attention too, so I can't sharpen it while watching TV. It's not an easy blade to maintain, but its cutting power is worth it.

I used a round ceramic stick to touch it up. when it gets real dull I will wrap sand paper around a dowel rod.

Reason I ask is that I have a Lansky round rod diamond rod that I started working on the edge with--seems to be ok but taking forever.

I would be trying not to hit the edge hard with my Diamond stone. Mine is really really aggressive though, good for in-field touch ups really. It's definitely a lot easier to sharpen on the ceramic rod, but it's also 3x as long as the diamond rod. I can hit the whole blade length with the ceramic rod in one swipe. it takes almost 4 on the diamond.

Yes, doesn't slice but rips.

Yes, that is what I found out. It is a bit better but I did not mess with it much this weekend due to Mom's Day.
