Thanks all. I think the results a pretty good for the first kick at the can. I had the 'vore in the pot about 10 to 15 minutes each time, and used new bleach on the second round. I would be curious to see what the bleach would do to res c.. I don't have any res c dipped blades I want to experiment with. The pot is pretty warm, I wonder what its melting point is? And I know the results of bleach on black clothing... white res c???? It would be nice if there were no effects on the handle.

Someone did a test awhile back and determined that Res C held up until about 400* F

That was JJ, but I wonder if the hot BLEACH would do anything to it?

Wow, that turned out great. I've thought about forcing a patina on some of my blades but never to that extent. Maybe my scrapavore is due for a change...

Wow, I would be terrified to do that even after seeing the pictures. Kind of reminds me of texture on the green finish that the Swamp uses. Very cool!

That's a little extreme for me, I'll stick with a gradual patina !

I'm confused, the article linked at the top mentions a black rust and a redish rust, and alludes to the black rust being desirable and the red rust undesirable. Is that redish rust that formed on the blade from the bleach patina?
the end result looks good though. Very interesting thread!

TT, from what I got the hot bleach caused the rust (red) that was brushed off and then "Dipped" again and again brushed off. THEN it was soaked in a baking soda solution to kill all effects of the bleach then once again "Cleaned up". This is what left the "BLACK" pitted patina on the steel.

It wont rub off and keeps them from rusting

The blade after soaking and polishing and rubbing with oil does end up looking blackish. The red rust was only during the bleach soak. I was worried when i pulled it out the first time and saw red.

I had the "should I?, shouldn't I?" thoughts for a few minutes but they quickly passed. Not like the time I sharpened the tip on my soldering iron and set about stippling the grip on my M&P9 $60 vs $600 and I get to stand back from the fumes.. sure why not
