44fred, I have been out of guns for a while but here is my thinking. Since your Ruger is so accurate, keep it in a padded case and IF you got go leave you have an accurate game getter. ONE shot is a lot harder to hone on than two or three if you are in a survival situation.

I've never had a nylon 66 but have heard some folks say they are kind of fragile.

Summo, who is VERY gun savvy has recommended a Marlin Papoose. It's a take down semi auto that he says is a nice little rifle.

I said it one and I will say it again. the best survival 22lr rifle I have ever used is the S&W MP15-22. yeah yeah every body will say mall ninja BUT it is a great gun. its very light, and I have had military, swat, and other great shooters try it and fall in love just holding it. it truly functions just like a AR15 and breaks down with the same push to pins and pull the bolt. every other tactical 22lr such as the colt(not even made by colt it a sub contract gun) H&K(also sub contract gun) and many other have the look but not the function. The very way its made makes very easy to clean and it fits inside my back with the lower receiver off. to shoot push gun together and push to pins and your ready to rock. It comes with 25 round mags and in a pinch you can shoot a lot of rounds quick. The mags are the easiest 22lr mags to load and they fit in ar15 30round mag pouches. some will scoff but the gun has very metal just the trigger group, bolt, and barrel, the rest is a very high quality polymer(think glock. you can give it many of the same up grades as a ar15 and it makes a great training gun because of the cheap ammo. it is a real tack driver even my sister and mom can pick it up and shoot silver dollar size holes at 25yds. I have a special magpul addition with a match barrel with the folding sights, moe grip, and moe stock. eats every ammo I try and just loves CCI.
I know 22lr is not considered a great self defense round but with 25 rounds and six mags and more on the way I wouldn't want to be on the other end of the barrel. If you have any questions just ask and I would love to answer them. I got mine though the Field and Sheild gun shop in central Ohio and have been very happy. I put a lepould mark ar 1by4 power scope on a burris ar mount and have a great gun. find one and try it!

GD, was just talking on another thread how I thought a 22 would be a great GET OUT OF DODGE, gun. TO me, IF you have to Bug Out the game plan should be to AVOID detection. Get your mindset into "You're the rabbit and everyone else is the Fox"! And the lowly 22 can be a defensive gun in a pinch, just not a long range one.

Only 22 AR I have dealt with was 22 rimfire in the M16 that I had to use in the military once to qualify. It was NOT a tack driver.

there are several variations of the MP15-22 that are threaded and equipped with flash hiders and other goody's. The magpul MOE grip lets me store a Otis 22cal cleaning kit right in the grip. This gun is not a .223 to 22lr conversion. it is strictly a 22lr. most ar15 22lr conversion kits wont shoot really accurate because the rifling in the barrel is made for 55grain or heaver rounds moving at several thousand feet per second not 36 grain 22lr moving 1200 feet per second. the upper receiver on the mp15-22 is not metal. the bold slides in to the upper and rides in two rails. the bolt is very easy to clean and maintain. my father has served in a special forces groups and worked for federal and state governments in a law enforcement setting and loves the mp15-22. He also used the military m16 22lr kits and is not a big fan.

Now something a little different
I know someone spoke of the importance of bringing along prescriptions in your BOB. This could be a real problem unless you happen to bug out right after getting a 3 month supply refilled.
A couple years ago when things were really tight (lost job, no insurance), I needed blood pressure meds and frankly couldn't see paying big $$$ to go to a new Dr., (I moved) run tests etc. just to get what I've been taking for years. My old Dr. would no longer write a prescription since he was officially no longer my Dr. due to the move.
I went on line and found an oversees company that produces my needed drug and was able to have them send me a 6 month supply w/o a prescription. Was this illegal?
Probably so, but I had proof the drug was prescribed to me in the not to distant past for years. BTW, the 6 month supply was cheaper then what I was paying when I had insurance!
For non narcotic prescriptions, you may want to keep a few month supply on hand just in case. Just be sure and rotate them into your supply to keep fresh.

Personally speaking, what you did wasn't illegal. Am I concerned? Not in the slightest. You had extenuating circumstance, PLUS you had just had a script go out of date and hadn't gotten established a new doctor yet. Would I as a cop have done anything about it, No, as I said you might not have followed the correct LEGAL procedures, but in my opinion, which doesn't really amount for anything, you were just trying to keep yourself alive, and THAT should allow for some leeway.

Just my personal two cents which doesn't mean anything really.
