So this is part me being jealous and part me whining. I really want a DogFather but the exchange prices are out of control. I want a user I don't care about having a safe queen. I want a chopper I can go beat on. I swore to myself that I would make a DF my next buy. But I have'nt seen one for less than 250 in months and even a user that has been beat on a little. I did see one for 100 or 150 that would have been perfect but a dealer who was selling one in the post below it for 200 or so bought it then relisted it a week later for 50 bucks more.
Now I'm not upset that that guy is making money cause if thats how he pays the bills well thats awesome. But it kinda sucks that these things are getting so pricey. I just saw a DFle that sold for $425 today. How are us pound pupies supposed to play?

Well this is just me being angry. Thanks for listening. -Jason

Yeah, I want a DF as well (would be my first sy)....They sure have increased in price.... Don't really wanna have to fork over $250 for a knife that sold for what 140/150?

Sometimes you just get lucky and are at the right place at the right time.
My very first purchase was from a fellow dog on the exchange. He actually
sold me the knife at his cost. I was grateful and will someday pass on the
favor.
From what I understand, people won't part with 'em because they are so well
liked. This leaves the dealers free to demand higher prices.
Keep your chin up, your DF will show his wet nose to you soon.

Yeah. I have the same gripes. I would love to go back in time and get a DFLE and a Scrapmuk at cost, but that's not going to happen.

I'm sure there are collectors out there with 20 Dog Fathers in a box. That's animal cruelty!

I have to keep reminding myself that there are some good people out there that aren't in it for the money and are willing to sell an extra blade at cost just to spread SY goodness.

Hopefully you and I will someday get our SY grails at a decent price.

When I went to Blade last year, there were 4 Dogfathers laying on the table when I got to the booth. I had one in my hand and decided not to buy it for $140. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif" alt="" /> I ended up paying $200 for the one I have now and count myself lucky to have found it for that.

I hear yah man. I have been wanting a Son of Dogfather for quite sometime. But when they show up for $200 I just cant pay that knowing what they went for originally. Hopefully the 11 line will satisfy alot of wants seeing as there are choppers and all. I just hope there are more colors than black.

It is hard to pay over retail for any item but it is also good to know these quality Bussekin hold value so well.

The path to true knowledge is paved with wasted money.

The problem is not that you would be buying a $160 knife for $240. The problem is that you can (eventually) buy a $240 knife for $160.

Basically you are buying direct from the factory thanks to the Busse business structure. If you consider what the markup would be for the same knives if they went retail then you would be paying just about same as the secondary prices. Maybe a little less...

If you knew what WalMart paid for the the stuff they sold you'd probably be sick. As it is you know what most of the guys in the exchange probably paid for the knives. IMHO the knives are worth those exchange prices for the most part and that's why the markup exists. I'm actually happy that Busse Kin knives can maintain such a high value and it also means they will be doing business until the warranty runs out.

People will sell things for what people will pay. Many are selling them to make some $ and they aren't going to sell them for what they paid for them...unless they are truly just looking to get their money back. If no one paid $400 for a DF then no one would sell them for that but people are willing to pay higher prices to get these blades that are no longer available. I've only sold one knife on BF but I do plan to sell more eventually, and the plan is to make some money. Just keep an eye out and you can eventually find a good deal. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Paying more than retail is common for many things like rare cars, knives, guns, etc. But retail goes out the window when your talking about something that is no longer made. Who cares what a 57 Chevy retailed for? You ain't going to pay that now for one unless its a complete rust bucket. Anyway- You have to put things in perspective. And the truth of it is...if there are lots of folks out there that want to pay $300 for DF's then thats what they will sell for and those that hate to pay over what they originally sold for will be out of luck. I know it sucks but that's how it works. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Best thing to do is wait until the next big show (it'll be tough waiting but it really is the best thing to do) and get a proxy. There are a handful of dogs here that that always seem more than happy to proxy for the other dogs here. If you ever get really tempted to spend a bunch of money on an overpriced secondary market Bussekin then go to the knifemakers part of the exchange at BF and get yourself something handmade, my personal favorite is G L Drew. That's what I do and I've always been glad I did it.

Just try and be patient.

Isn't there a 911 coming out this year? I assume that's going to be similar to the 511 but bigger, presumably Dogfather size? I'm guessing it'll be a big chopper that will stand up to anything short of driving into a brick wall and using it as a ladder rung. I'd just wait for that if I wanted a big chopper.

In the meantime get a 511 and beat on that to your heart's content. Any of these Busse knives are probably way ahead of knives people depending on for thousands of years with much harder use than any of us will ever put them to.
