We've had two dogs try and attack us in our own yard, I chased one of them about a half block with a 6 inch blade in my hand, It probably decided that it didn't want any part of that fat old man yelling and waving around a shiny object.

If you are building a deck it is hard to beat a hammer, I've use pepper spray (dog not bear spray) twice on dogs, both times it stopped them instantly.
