I agree with you for the most part, Arch. I think I also agree with Jaytock in regards to a little variety.

When SHTF it'll definately be the more standardized cartridges for me though.

I'm a guy that always tries to fit "gear" into a self-imposed survival models or categories. Therefore, I will always try to limit the number of calibers I have. This means any varmint control will be handled with a 22LR or 5.56x45mm.

I guess a good ole 7.62x51mm might be called upon for certain types of "varmints" if the conditions were right

Arch, I hear you on that. My only problem is I'm just as good limiting my calibers as I am my Bussekin Blades .
I can appreciate the survival point of view, and the 5.7x28mm is the only oddball caliber I own. I like the Five-Seven pistol for its high mag capacity and accuracy, but if the S were to ever HTF it would be a glock on my hip and an AR over my shoulder.
My go to varminter/hunting round is the 7.62x51mm, from prairie dogs all the way to hogs and everything in between. Since I already have 5.7x28mm ammo on hand it would mainly be a "fun" gun.

BTW I always thoroughly enjoy your posts. I drop in and out of lurker mode as job and life permit. I appreciate how informative and detailed your survival posts are!

You hit the nail on the head, or I guess more appropriate for this thread you hit the firing pin on the primer !

Totally off subject kinda but I've always wanted a 25-06 for a varmit rifle.

I would love to see the P90 or PS90 chambered for 9mm. Much less expensive to shoot, more available ammo and more power. The downside would be the magazine capacity dropping by I don't know how much but I love the package.

I don't think the 5.7 will ever gain popularity. It's a very niche round designed for armor penetration out of a Personal Defense Weapon (machine pistols and bull-pups). The only advantages are the ability to use existing variety of armor piercing .224 caliber bullets and reliability in full or semi-auto weapons.

.22-250 would be more versatile in a varmint rifle and 223 would also more than get the job done.

I've since reconsidered. I'll more than likely go with the tried and true and inexpensive .223. Thanks for the input guys.
