My 1911 shoots like a dream. We were doing a long day at the range last Saturday, and we were back at the 25 yard line, shooting 3 shot groups. The instructor says "the best your pistol can shoot this far out is about 3" groups - so don't be discouraged if your groups get considerably larger than they were back at the 10"

My first group was 2.5 inches, and I didn't have anything over 5" from the 25 shooting at a man sized silhouet. I sure wasn't doing that w/ my Glock!
3 rounds, 2.5 in, at 25 yards that is good, really good, and no glock

Thanks! My average group was about 4" from there - but I didn't have a "point" to aim at - just center mass. I'm thinking about upgrading to a match barrel - which could bring it in even tighter! I was a good shot w/ my Glock - but nowhere near this good. The 1911 is like an extension of my arm - its crazy.

1911's are awesome from an accuracy standpoint. Keep in mind though ( as I am sure you know) there is an accuracy/reliability tradeoff at some point. For a duty/carry weapon, reliability is higher on my list.

Good call. I do plan on getting a new trigger w/ an adjustable "reset." I should probably just build a new "match grade" pistol for target shooting huh?
I would. The original 1911 spec was more like the Glock in terms of accuracy. Reliability came first, then gun smiths came along with tune ups and after market parts to make them more accurate. Which is fine, but the 1911 is a combat weapon at its heart. In general (of course there are excceptions) there is a reliability/accuracy tradeoff with any weapon. The military designs them to go bang all the time and then the public designs them to group more consistenly.
I do have Wilson Combat guide rod, 18lb spring, and shock buff in there. Other than that I've just done grips/magwell, a front tritium sight is coming, and I'll do the adjustable reset trigger upgrade. I haven't done any of the throating or polishing or trigger jobs or any of that. Do you think I should ditch the Shock Buff for duty carry?

I just got "Spies Like Us" today at Shopko - the wife hasn't seen it yet, so we're going to watch it when she gets off work. Thats a great old movie. Picked up "Coming To America" today too.

He's had a few beers, and stepped off the back porch, and blew away a cactus that looked strangely lik a large green man.
