Ah, what would you know about machete's Doc? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> I mean just because you use one more than probably 90 percent of the folks here. Oh wait, I guess that DOES make you an expert! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

How's your world going Doc?

Going well skunk... busy ...

I don't have to go out and swing those things as often anymore, the price of being large and in charge... but my guys do... so we are always evaluating new cutting tools.... but... we try to keep the cost reasonable.

The BG parang works just fine for me, I don't really have a need for a "Real" machete. Just not the kind of stuff I need to cut around here. My BG is mainly for tree limbs and branches.

I think a lot of blades out there are fine.... especially for around the house lighter work. ...
but you figure that BG cost $30, more or less, and that is okay. But you can get a martindale for about 20, and a tramontina even less.... plus, you don't have to use a 24".... some guys like 18"... some even smaller, although I have said this in the past... *I* have trouble calling anything under 18" a machete....
(I know Vic, the marine raider machete is 12", ... notice I prefaced the statement with "I") <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I can tell you this, if I had an expensive machete like some manufacturers produce and it slung out of my hand into the murky swamp and became lost, I would be upset with myself (doesn't mean I don't have any of those, 'cause I do)...If I lose (and I have) a cheap blade... I just get a new one.

Oh... before somebody says lanyard or wrist strap, don't do it... I have hauled more than one crew man to the ER over that. Tether a blade to your hand, and get cut when it comes loose...

This is just my opinion, and you know about those..

But to each his own... it is better to be proficient with what you have and comfortable using it, than to have something just cause someone else likes or recommends it.

I agree with you there doc, although I HAVE done that before, luckily it's never came out of my hand, although it almost did once. I Don't do the lanyard around the hand thing any more unless it's over water or a long drop.

Hey brother, glad to see ya here!

You made a great point of losing a blade in a swamp environment. I guess in that situation you might want a more easily repacable one.i still love my esee lite machete but I don't run the risk of losing it.

And I will not use a laynard on my machete any more <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Take care doc

Never done much chopping, so I've never thought about this. I would be the one to use a lanyard not knowing any better, so THANK YOU for the tip! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

NOW, when I DO use a lanyard, I lay the loop over the top of the handle and grip the handle as usual so one side of the lanyard is over my fingers and I place my thumb OVER the top of the lanyard so it is between my thumb and the handle, AND I push it forward toward the blade. It seems to help me a bit but if it does slip (fly out of my hand) it should just slide off my hand. Now if I am just doing normal cutting with a knife and I am over water or a drop off I will loop it around my wrist, but I am not chopping so there isn't any danger there.

I remember a HD talking about the steel wrist blender effect of a lanyard on a chopper. Never had it happen but I did have my M9LE pulled out of my hand by a very tough vine. The knife binded in the material and the tension of the vine pretty much just snatched it right out my hand. The blade was tossed deep into a bunch of thorny vines. It was a major pain to get in there and retrieve my M9LE. I can only imagine being neck deep in the funk and this happening. So while the M9LE is my biggest knife I really don't consider it a chopper. The handle just isnt right. With the lanyard out of the picture I look more at the handle shape and materials now. ResC is great but I also look for large blades to have a butt that's wider than the mid section of the handles and if possible I want a grippie material.

I don't have a machete yet but when looking at them I factor all of that stuff in. I also think about handles breaking and micarta seems like it my be in for the win. Which is why I think the ESEE looks like a good option. But I do like the shape of the blade on the BG Parang. Just wish It was ResC and in the ScrapYard store.

Still I wll probably pick up a few super cheap machetes just to have around.

lazi, the orange part of the BG is kinda hard plastic, but still has some give o it. The gray part is some sort of rubber material that allows you to have a good grip and just sort of locks you hand to the grip. PLUS the "Subhilt" aspect of the handle also helps you to retain your grip. I personally recommend the BG, as an all around "Woods" machete. Now if you need it for traditional "Vegetative" matter" material, it isn't the best. to me the BG parang is for denser heaver WOODY type material.

I recently acquired a Fiddleback Machete (12"). Have not used it yet, but the handle feels awesome and the blade feels great in hand! It's leaving for Rainwalker soon...so I've got her sitting in a box waiting on a companion.
