I like a thin machete with a wicked edge in 1095 and a smaller fixed blade of choice. Maybe a SAK for good measure.

If I am going to go hatchet I will just belly up and get an axe.

Not 100% sure what the question is, but Zilla, that is all

JRod, I still can't get over the fantastic job you did on that Zilla. I came into a KZII and would love to do the same (handle isn't as nice as the KZI though).

Good question. It all depends on your situation. Base camping? Back packing? Alot or moderate amount of wood prep?

If I'm car or base camping I usually have some combination of a axe, wedge, hatchet, large saw, machete, chopper, smalls, multi's... all the toys. A good splitting axe/maul, wedge can't be beat. As long as I don't have to carry it around...

Backpacking with the need for firewood or shelter prep is handled by my B11 or DFLE. They are light enough and versatile enough to manage most of the big jobs, especially used in conjunction with a good folding saw (like a Silky.) I don't like to carry an axe and find a hatchet too limiting. A folder and maybe slicer for food prep is about all else that I need.

Thanks man, it's a little scary to start one, but once you start it's fairly simple.

I been going over this the last few days with my own B.O.B and I have had a Battle Rat and a Gen 1 Howling Rat in it and been contaplating replacing the BR with a Camp Tramp since it does just about what the BR does and is easier to conceal and lighter if I was on foot. living in the north a machete just isn't as handy as the bigger knife(again, to me anyway). To be fair to the dog in me my SOD and War Dog or S5LE would also be good.lol

Great opinions and descriptions guys. I am thinking about strapping the SODLE on the pack for a while and see how I like going back with it, not like I will have a chance to pack before March though :<

I love the large choppers and plan on getting a 911 the first day they are released. (Hint, hint, Dan). BTW I want a Tan handle w/Camo blade to match my MO 511. But I digress. However, in real life, I take a small knife like my Swampwarden along with a machete. Big choppers are more for blasting away tree limbs and the like in my yard or on short outings. Big choppers will always have a place in my collection even if they only get used occasionally.

I am of the big knife does it all theory, too. Look at that POS Gerber is selling with Bear Grylls name on it. I broke mine in 30 minutes. Then look at Ron Hood's Hoodlum. It a big pig sticker made of 5160 spring steel. It works, though all of my other big knives can out chop it. There is a reason our forefathers used big blades. They work. The ONLY reason I don't always carry a big knife is it scares the heck out of people on public trails. I never go into the swamp without a BIG knife or machete. I also carry a folder for smaller tasks. Probably the ultimate survival knife is the lowly machete. But a big bowie, kukri, or bolo will do. I have no doubt that the new 911 will be an excellent big knife.

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.
