Bowie's knife in the 1840s had a 14" blade. I think the original Hudson Bay camp knives had about 8" blades. Still considered big by most folks today. The rifleman's knives of the revoutionary era were short swords. Anyone who has used machetes knows how efficient they are compared to short knives. But Bear runs every where he goes, and a machete might slow him down! Why take all day felling a small tree with some dainty little "survival" knife when a chopper can do it quickly? For me, the Bushwacker, M9LE, ESEE Junglas, DFLE, and other similar sized knives just work well. I don't like them too heavy, though.

I am of the big knife does it all theory, too. Look at that POS Gerber is selling with Bear Grylls name on it. I broke mine in 30 minutes. Then look at Ron Hood's Hoodlum. It a big pig sticker made of 5160 spring steel. It works, though all of my other big knives can out chop it. There is a reason our forefathers used big blades. They work. The ONLY reason I don't always carry a big knife is it scares the heck out of people on public trails. I never go into the swamp without a BIG knife or machete. I also carry a folder for smaller tasks. [color:"red"] Probably the ultimate survival knife is the lowly machete.[/color] But a big bowie, kukri, or bolo will do. I have no doubt that the new 911 will be an excellent big knife. I have to agree. Not the best camp knife (although works well) and not the best chopper (although works well enough)....it's great for those meager tasks. Dan...I need a Scrapchete! 12" long, 3/32" thick SR77, and a Regulator handle. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

It's not a large chopper(exactly) and it's not a machete(exactly) but I've got the BG (Yeah I know) Parang Machete and I do like it. 1/8 inch and it hits pretty good. BUT the DF actually hit about as well. That being said, I can't wait for my 911. And yeah, I've still got to abuse my BWM, but dang it hurts to think about it. BUT I will get around to it one day, maybe after I get my 10 Scrapyard Cordura sheath in. It will of course, just be a temporary home until the real thing comes in! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> I just had an overpowering thought yesterday evening to "Buy it you'll like it". Don't know WHERE that thought came from. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
