Dear Dan,

I need some help....in a BAD way. You see, it's almost Valentines day and I got the "look" this weekend when I recommended that we postpone v-day gifts this year in lieu of our first child that we are expecting. It sounded reasonable when I went over it in my head...you know, put the money where it matters...priorities and all of that. Well, in practice, my idea failed...and failed miserably.

Anyhow, after spending more than I wanted to on some nice flowers and what not today...I was hoping to send my wife a link to something fun / exciting that I need (man statement for want), in hopes that I too might get a loving gift.

Then it hit me...I'll ask her to get me a Gift Certificate from Scrapyard!! What a perfect gift, she can get me some Yard Scraps that I can use on my next inevitable purchase at the Scrapyard. But...there's a problem. They don't exist

Any chance of helping out a guy who needs something to tell his wife to get him for special occasions? I recognize there are 3 knives in the store right now...but I already own those, and we can't be sure this will always be the case!

Yard Scraps would make Valentines Day soooooo much better

Get used to that look, now you have Mother's Day to think about too.

That would be cool if the Busse Knife Group would offer shop credits available for purchase for times like this.

I think the option for gift credits or some variation would be fantastic. I have loads of family that would never (and I would never want them to) spend the kind of money on a single gift that the knives I love cost, but having a way for them to purchase smaller increments gives me a fantastic option when everyone asks what to get me for xmas/birthday, etc. I reckon a whole lot of folks would use these.

Thanks, Dan! I know the overhead burden of managing something like this can be a problem. I'll also look around for unique solutions that perhaps you can leverage as a model.

A few quick ideas:

I don't believe in all of this, but it's a start: http://www.business.com/guides/gift-certificates-for-small-businesses-3621/

http://www.giftango.com/merchantb2c.aspx This group offers a SaaS system that manages the burden for you (the question is costs...but maybe that is passed on to the actual buyer, and not SYKCO?). You have to have a POS system to utilize the card number, however. I like the virtual option though.

There are multiple similar solutions, but Giftango seems to be the most aggressive / active in this area.

Interesting to learn about if nothing else

EDIT: Dan, just wanted to clarify that I have no interest in the company mentioned above...just trying to help shed a little light on the topic.

Not to mention the looks you are likely already getting for birthdays (one more to remember), anniversaries, and Christmas

Gift credits, eh?

Could people just post a gift amount against our user accounts, sort of like the shop will once in a while issue us credits? Then just a nice little email the buyer gets back with a graphic stating the amount that can either be printed off or forwarded on. Just a thought.

A Visa gift card is a little generic, but I bet they can be used as a replacement for Yard Scraps.

don't know how shop credits are handled but unless you are expecting large volumes it can maybe be handled like the shop credits except with sending out an official certificate. redeemed the same way that anybody redeems their shop credits but just sold in batches from the store or special via special order.

I happen to know a guy who could work up a decent looking certificate (hint: me). sure he'd be willing to help make this happen.

Awesome! Would you be willing to put a draft together, see if you can whet Dan's appetite?
