Haha. The term they used was "ships on a chip." without getting too technical, the ships are printed on silicon squares about a centimeter on the sides and a few milimeters deep. They are sent into orbit on regular rockets. They use solar sailing to increase speed. That is, they have a reflective side and an absorbing side, so they get pushed by light abd solar winds. They are electrically magnetized powered by tiny photovoltaic cells printed on the absorbing side. The magnetization keeps them from flinging out of orbit as the increase speed by "hanging" onto the earth's magnetic field. Once sufficient speed to make their journey is reached, the demagnitize and fly out of the orbit. They plan to send them to planets in other solar systems in swarms in a long stream of tens of thousands. Once the first ones get to the planet, they will use an onboard sensor that detects life susporting elements like O2 or water and send a single beep from a transmitter. They will actually fry their circuits be doing so. The next ship in line will relay the beep back and so on. If the beeps make it back, the planet has water. These ships are expected to move faster than anything man has ever created using nothing but solar sailing.
