The variable switches will cause your lights color temperature to change and this throws off your cameras white balance. They typically warm up as power is dropped. Use cinefoil to help direct light or make snoots, etc for your lights.

I'll be living 35 miles from Mt St Helens, and plan on taking tons of pictures of that! She says when the conditions are right, you can see a glow at night!
