I have to say that the Guide Gun is one of the quickest and best shooting brush guns I have ever held. I bought it when I was spending a lot of time in grizzly country. That and a Ruger Redhawk 44 mag.

The Guide gun has a drop in trigger ans sights from Wild West guns up in Anchorage. That thing is a smooth running rifle.
My 94 has ghost ring sights, that rifle gets on target faster then any other I own.
The only thing is the 18 1/2 inch magna-ported barrel makes hearing protection a must have when practicing

Dad has a Winchester Model 100 in .284 that is an amazing gun to shoot. It has killed more than 50 whitetails over the years, and he's never had to shoot one twice. The biggest problem is finding ammo these days.

Wild West guns make some beautiful rifles

The only time I'd worry with a .308 or a .30-06 would be in grizzly country.
Never bothered me just packing a 308 up north.
The truth is that the drive there and back is more dangerous than the hunting.
Guys that hunt in grizzly country just like to impress people that never have been in those areas.
Makes us seem more manly than we really are

Well, it's worked on me!

Mine is pretty stock looking except the sights. I like the ghost rings on a lever gun. They are great. The trigger is the best drop in I ahve ever put on a rifle.

for whatever reasons I only reallly take to firearms in a .300 caliber. may sound silly but if you told me a .300 whatever would work but a .200 or a .400 was more practical I'd probably still want to go with 300.

My favorite rifle of all time is a .30-06. I can hunt big game in this region and not be worried about being undergunned.
I could easily hunt the rest of my life with one of my 308's and not think twice.
The biggest moose I ever shot was with my winchester model 88 in 308.
My current favorite hunting rifle is a Rem 600 in 308

good to know... as much as I read on the subject its a question until you are out there. my dad has a 30-06 that I may can convince him to let me shoot. other than that I don't see myself going past .308 for anything in mississippi. hogs and deer is what I really want to hunt so I figure im okay but so many choices makes you wonder.

and even though love to shoot my pellet guns and 10/22 I still wonder about a .38/357 for small game like squirrel and rabbit.

I've got a 10/22 that has suddenly become a Jam-o-matic. I'm not sure what's going on with it, but I'm sure a good cleaning and lubing is in the near future.

I used a 30/06 for a while and the only reason I sold it was because I didn't like the rifle.
In real world terms the 308 and 30/06 are about equal, iirc the 30/06 has around 12% more muzzle velocity when shooting 180 grain bullets of like construction from the same manufacturer.
So what a 308 will do at 200 yards a 30/06 can do at 225 yards.
The 30/06 will also handle higher grain bullets better.
Given a choice between a 308 or 30/06 I would base it on which rifle fitted my better

I have thought about getting a trigger job done on my winchester

I'm thinking it MAY be an extractor. It'll fire, but won't pull the empty out. I tore it down and cleaned it a while back, and I'm wondering if I put something back together wrong.

Or maybe just didn't lube it enough or in the right spots.
