The PM2 is a great knife for the price you can get in the US. The average price here for the normal one is around $200 with the customs duty and the retailor having to make his profit.

The Umnumzaan is around $600 here. I like my Chris Reeve knives. Had a small, was taken in a mugging but I came out alive so I am happy, got an Insingo now, but the Umnumzaan is calling me. I like mechanics and CRK really pushed the concept of a framelock with the Umnumzaan locking on the ceramic ball in stead of the Ti lock face IMO.

Thanks for the birthday shout!

I was a bit worried and then I spoke to my GF. She tends to be calm when I am not and vice versa. She told me give it 2 weeks and it will be sorted. That calmed me down. Next week when it arrives it will be 2 weeks to the day

Marty, Now I'm confused, The Umnumzaan Is a Titanium frame lock where the rubber "Washers" act as a bumper on the dual thumstuds. You're saying that the Um detents open on a ceramic ball with the frame lock keeping it in position?

Women are smart creatures! I'm getting a Spyderco Sage - the one with the titanium frame lock. Sage 2 I think? It's like a cheapskate's Sebenza. I can spend being myself to drop $500+ on a fixed blade, but when it comes to folders I can't justify it.

I might have gotten it wrong, but His site says this about the Um.

A ceramic ball creates the interface between the blade locking surface and the integral locking arm surface. The ball doubles to drop into a detent on the blade to ensure the blade does not open accidentally.

I remember the pictures you posted up a while back of the Insingo. I like that blade style, it's a nice looking folder.

Randy.

As posted the ceramic ball has two functions, one to keep the blade in the closed position like any other framelock and the other as the lock face that moves behind the blade when open to keep it open. When it came out some questioned if the ceramic ball that doubled as the frame lock contact with the blade was durable enough.

Chris Reeve showed him pounding it on an anvil and it dented the anvil, so it can take a considerable amount of impact.

Normal framelocks you have the detent and normal Ti lock face that is heat treated to near ceramic hardness that contacts with the blade to keep the blade open. The Umnumzaan opens and locks on the ceramic ball two birds with one stone. I have a bunch of pictures I could show, but the computer is screwed and I am on the phone, sorry.

Does this make any sense?

I have a detailed post I do based on my talking to makers, reading and talking to engineers about liner and frame locks geometry. I will post it here for you in the folder thread when I can.

Well my friends, it's about that time of the day again. Almost time for me to get off work until tonight. Two more nights and I'll be ending my work week, can't wait, I'm tired.

So until later I wish you all peace and rest in your lives and the lives of those you love and are about.

May there always be Sunshine in your lives.

Marty, ok IF you mean it has TWO ceramic balls, I understand. If It doesn't I guess I'm still confused. I will just have to look at mine when I get home to try and figure it out. Sometimes my conceptualization skills are lacking.

Take care Randy.

I think my explenations also suck sometimes when I don't have pictures! Look closely at where the lock contacts the blade. I will try and get some nice pictures to compare normal framelock to the Umnumzaan.

Marty, I looked at my Umnumzaan and I see what you are talking about now.

Here are macro shots, NOT my pictures.

see how the ceramic ball goes further then the Ti itself? The blade locks on the ceramic ball itself and it functions as the normal ceramic ball that we are use to.

Here is my old Sebenza

Notice the mark on the lock face where it engages the back of the blade and where the detent is located. This is the normal standard that most framelocks function on.

The Umnumzaan is a while bread requiring so much tolerance to get right it is amazing IMO.
