Actually it's not really all that heavy. It's probably close to 1/4 inch thick but tapers toward the tip. Also the tang is nothing more than a bolt welded to the blade and shoved through the handle an peened over the brass butt cap.

How's the steel to sharpen? And does it hold a edge

Yeah when shtf you will see lots of that style blades. But all the JYD's will have blades of the highest order

I don't know about Randy's knife, but in a lot of countrys they use leaf-springs off old vehicles.

It sharpens up real easy. When I first got it, and before I rotated back to the states every time it got dull I just wet down the top of our concrete wall and went to work. Took a little while, but it worked. I finally after about three months got a whet stone and things went a lot better. Like I said, it's temper is what ever they did when they made the leaf spring it was made out of. All the work to make the knife was done by hand by the indigenous natives of the Philippines, the Negritos.
