The advantage of widescreen?
The advantages, or lack thereof, depend on your uses.
For me, since I use cameras with a 2:3 aspect ratio, a wide screen for looking at them makes a lot of sense.

I just bought a new LCD monitor today. Most options were for wide-screen and it seemed like the most bang for the buck. This new HP w2207 has a gorgeous picture quality, but what is the advantage of the widescreen? I either have to stretch the picture which is annoying or waste a lot of space on the sides.
I don't watch movies on my computer. I have a TV.
. more real estate (bigger) you'll be able to see more than regular even if you don't see movies, you should configure it fit your needs, like with the lines/bars on the side of the picture and not stretched out. And when you have a wider picture it will fit in.

Yes, wide screens work well for having lots of tool bars next to documents. They are also good for having multiple documents open at once.
Also, of course, they're good for viewing "letterbox" format videos and movies.
