The machax's sweet spot is actually just behind where it is widest ( just past the head)
The Zillas sweet spot is about here, to several inches in front of where I have it sunk into the wood, the zilla ( in my tests) has a larger sweet spot than my HI Kukri

The machax is actually dwarfed by the zilla
im no expert but this is what I've come to notice about most recurve blades. if you want the most from it then it's usually right before the tip of the belly. that's with slicing as well. i find i usually want to draw the cut into the tip of the bell with the most pressure focused behind the tip. same with chopping. actually looking at jros pic his sweet spot it a little bit father back than I would anticipate.
for maximum penetration you do want the tip of the belly though. it's a bit like a snap cut with a tanto blade. the point will travel the deepest into the material. but for chopping I'm thinking you would want to cut through as much material as you can to be efficient. I think the tip of the belly would go deeper but for whatever reasons I don't think you will cut through as much material that way. like I said, I'm no expert. just my opinion.
the curve is excellent for detail work. one of the reasons I love recurve blades.
