Take a look at the Sigma 170-500 mm f/5.6-6.3. I used to use one. Even though my 600 f/4 IS L smokes it in every way, it's still a helluva lens for ~$400. $400, wow. I was looking at some of their 18-120 (i think) a while ago and they were that price! Didn't think to check on a telephoto.

I just have the rebel kit lens and the canon 70-300mm cheapo lens... They both seem really "soft". i think the rebel xt can take better shots myself.

that would be sweet. we'd save on shipping! thanks knifeguy! gee for a knife guy in spring you should be the closest to the shop Dan is somewhere in the Woodlands about 15 minutes from me or so. I go up to that area all of the time. I asked if I could stop by to pick up some knives that I purchased once, but that wasn't an option. I assume they really don't have much of a shop here in TX. I think most everything is done at Jerry's shop. (Just a hunch). "Would" be sweet, but I was told no.
