I have heard a bit about the 300 WSM and it seems to be a nice round. PLUS (IF Ive got my story straight) being a short action is a big plus in my book.
It is a short action and balistically about the same as the 300 winmag

I would love something similar but in 300 wsm just because I hunt moose up north
My 600 is still shorter overall than my nephew's ruger scouts rifle and Iirc the ruger only has a 16 inch barrel

A 16" barrel with the 300 WSM wouldn't be a bad choice.... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />
Sometimes my model 70 in 338 winmag feels like it is ten feet long and a hundred pounds

What's the barrel length on that.

What's the barrel contour? Featherweight?

I have both as well and nylon to
Leather is my favorite

Do you know of any local sheath makers? In either kydex or leather?
I am getting a leather sheath made for my regulator by a guy here in mission
I will let you know how it works out
My only custom kydex sheath was made by nornark

I have not heard of nornark. Is he local? I have a couple custom shop knives and do not want to send them to the states to be fitted.

.308 can be used effectively out to 1 mile on man sized targets...... that is with an accurate gun, proper training and quality mil-dot based optics.

Ballistic wise, I thought it was close to the 300 Winmag.

Only downsides are :
-high cost per round.
-doesn't offer much terminal advantage over other .30 cal cartridges.
-doesn't offer much extra range over other .30 cal cartridges.
Lot cheaper to shoot then my 338 winmag
Here in Canada the 300 wsm is about the same cost to shoot as the 300 winmag
I have shot moose with both a 308 win and 300 winmag and my experience is the 300 hits with more authority

Try still hunting with a rig like that
I am not a target shooter but a hunter, I have hunted with a 308 win for about 30 years.
I've shot moose, elk, deer and black bear with it my closest shot being under ten yards and the farthest being measured out at over 550 yards (moose)

That's a pretty lengthy shot Bill. Specially on something as big as a Moose!

It will have a slight terminal advantage over other .30's, but not much.

The effects on your target is not an accurate measure as you would think...there are too many variables in this (ie shot placement, bullet performance etc.

The wound channel will be larger but not as large as switching to a .338....

The best way to increase wound channel size is increase bullet diameter and profile, velocity has less of an impact than these factors.

This is what I believe to be true anyways....
