I left out the part about using a PDA to use software which predicts trajectory..... this is the key to reaching out that far and getting on target fast. You can do things like that if you are doing southern beanfield type shooting, but I don't do that type of hunting Most of all my shots are well under a hundred yards. In fact my favorite hunting round is a 308 win, however some of my hunting is done in northern BC while grizzlies are still out and about For this area I prefer more punch then what a 308 can give

It is not fun working in a setting which has become dependent on electronics and then lose them during an upgrade.
.308 can be used effectively out to 1 mile on man sized targets...... that is with an accurate gun, proper training and quality mil-dot based optics. Try still hunting with a rig like that I am not a target shooter but a hunter, I have hunted with a 308 win for about 30 years. I've shot moose, elk, deer and black bear with it my closest shot being under ten yards and the farthest being measured out at over 550 yards (moose) This I speak of is not relegated to the target shooting community. See Magpul Precision Rifle video for more explanations.... Do not make the assumption that I do not know about ballistics Over the years I have studied Taylor knockout values, the heavy but slow moving bullet vs the lighter faster and other theories such as what Wolters proposed Not trying to say anything along those lines.... just presenting my views for whatever they are worth ( probably very little)
No offense taken In my experience when people start talking about hitting targets over a mile away, they usually haven't hunted much

Seeing the "In on Page 1" reminds me of all the gamer related forums i've visited in the past.
So.... if i use the excuse with my wife that ordering Scrapyard knives and other Bussekin are to stave off the coming zombie apocalypse, how well do you think that will fly? Worst case scenario if she makes you sell them I will take em off of your hands for a nice discount.

There is an old addage that goes something like this:

To me that means you know the capabilities of the round AND YOURSELF. Exactly when I want a real challenge I bow hunt or use my traditional hawken style 50 call black powder rifle If I want to limit myself to about 125 to 150 yards then I use one of my traditional lever actions When hunting moose up north it is my 338 winmag otherwise it will be my 308 win, and to be honest my 308 sees a lot of duty up north because it packs so easily. However I already have two 308's so if I buy a new rifle I want something different and in synthetic. A 300 wsm is a lot cheaper to shoot than a 338, it will do anything a 308 will do and really doesn't give up much to the 338 winmag in terms of performance Afterall bullet placement is important and shooting at a deer with a 458 winmag won't help if you can't hit anything with it
