And ill take that blade Skunk. Its got character. Do you own it?

Any history to impart?

Im loving it.

Yes, I have owned it since 1975. bought it in the philippines for $2.50 (the sheath cost me $25.00 down in texas in about 1980.

It is made from the leaf spring of some kind of vehicle and has only the temper of the original spring, in other words soft. BUT you can sharpen it on almost anything, say like a concrete wall, many times.

The inscription says "Negrito Hunting Bolo".

I have used that knife for everything. Screwdriver, hammer, knife, shovel, electrical jumper, skinning knife.

I Would LOVE to have a GOOD knife made exactly like that one, but then if I did it wouldn't be the same and I probably wouldn't like it as much.

Oh, I forgot to say the Brass guard and butt cap are made from melted down 20mm aircraft gun casings and the aluminum is just some kind of aluminum sheeting they probably stole from the base.

Nice Skunk. Thats a hand-me down for sure....son, daughter, grandkid....

Isnt 5160 and thoose kinds of steels what they make modern leaf springs and ball bearings from?

And forgive my ignorance but is it possible to strip the handle off and give a more modern heat treat to it?

Assuming you were so inclined and that its possible.

I need to read up on heat treating...

Like some stuff has cryo cooling ...multiple times unless i read it wrong...so technically it is possible to heat treat so mthing more than once?

Again unless I read wrong and the cry is a one shot thing

most steel hardening that makes a good blade is a multi step process of taking the knife to a certain temp and then bring it down and then back and down.

Here's something I want to throw out there for some thought. What if the FDM is not a knife but a hawk?
