Wow. The appearance of a knife makes little difference to me so I'd buy it if I had any faith that the temper wasn't ruined.

That is one scrappy scrapper 5, I have had the same experience with "nonknifers" doing things that will make you mad. If you spend that kind of money on their gifts and they break the tip using it as a screwdriver, get them a shard to go with their knives.
