I had one uncle that was usually very happy go lucky, but every once in awhile he would show that still waters do run deep

I may have told you this story before

I was a teenager at the time so this was the late 1970's or early 1980's
A neo Nazi group was planning a march and rally here in Vancouver

I was horrified and said to him how this should be outlawed

He said "Son I fought in a war so that he had the right to be an a**h***. Now he has that right and nobody should take that away from him. Now you, you have a responsibility to stand up and tell him that he is an a**h***, and let him know what is right

This man drove a tank in ww 2 and bulldozed mounds of dead bodies while freeing concentration camps
He was still able to put his own hatred of the Nazi ideals to the side in order to protect what he saw as the greater symbol

I don't know if I would have the strength to do what he did
But even to the end he placed the good of his country over himself

I know he and my other family members that served and continue to serve make a difference

You should be proud Bill. Nothing wrong with recognizing the accomplishments and sacrifices of those past. You Prove you are a good man by publicly stating your appreciation for the good they did.

I should have went on to say the Injustices they fought, trying to make a better world for those they didn't know and future generations.

Evil, not matter it's guise, should be fought. Unfortunately many times there are more that "Don't want to get involved" than those willing to stand up to tyranny when it finally comes time to "Put up or Shut up". I hope that if it is ever needed, I am such a man.

That is the reason I brought up "Starship Troopers." The point in the book is - To be a citizen and have the right to vote or run for office, you must have served. Reason being, a man who has served knows that the good of the group is more important than the good on the individual.

I know that is an extreme idea, and that is why his book was so controversial, but there is some truth there.

My grandfather fought in ww 1 and ww 2, he was too old to fight in the Korean War so he served in the home gaurd

Patriots always find a way to serve
