There was some talk about choils in a recent post and to be honest I really don't get them.
I love my Chopweiler and my Ratmandu but do the choils add any benefit to the knives, I can't really see what.
People talk about using then to ' Choke up ' for fine work but if the edge comes all the way back to the handle isn't your hand still close enough to the edge ?
Some also mention ease of sharpening but I've never had a problem sharpening my choil-less knives.

So lets hear your opinions and maybe someone can enlighten me on the subject.

I have to say it really depends on each knife design. elmax choils....... not a fan. R9 choil is great. B10 LE......... i bought the best of both worlds.

Good point, some choils are usable and some not.

What makes the R9 choil great, what benefit does it give over the same knife with the blade coming right up to the edge as on this one -

For me, the choil allows me to get my thumb and index finger more in line with each other closer to the cutting area. Hope that makes sense to you. And I think it adds more control. Oh I voted for it on knives with blades of 6 or more inches.

I generally prefer choilless, that's why I love my CABS.

really depends on what you are cutting. meat small blade or gaint piece no choil. little chunk big knife. i would like a choil grass or brush no choil. making a figure four trap...
depends on the blade length of the knife. depends on how big that knife is and what you will do with it.

If made large enough and positioned correctly, then choils are very useful. Ask anyone who owns a Vex or RMD.... The ergo's on those two are awesome.

The Vex choil is absolutely perfect. For the most part I like a full size choil. Now elf choils suck. Having issues with the Scrapmax choil and I also keep trying to put my finger where the choil should be on the Dog Booty. Not such a good thing.

Back in the day when I was frequently posting in the Wilderness & Survival forum at BF, this topic was unending. Some folks just hate wasting cutting edge on choils. I have knives with and without choils. I prefer no choil on a small bushcraft knife. But on a big knife like a M9LE, it's nice to be able to choke up a bit for detail work. My two cents in this endless debate.

Prefer choils on larger blades but prefer no choil on smaller blades. I know there are those who will agree with me and those who won't. Basically this is one of the [censored] if you do and [censored] if you don't. Everyone can't be pleased deal.

My vote was on 6" or smaller. I find them most usefull on the 5"-6" blades. Those are often allrounders, and a choil adds to the allround-ness...

Also, on the choil-less knife in the picture, there will still be a good half inch from your finger to the edge. I like to place my finger right where the edge starts.
With all that said, the choil has to be thought through, and many aren't!

It all depends on what each individual like, and how each use their knife...

I can't choose any of the answers above because for me it depends on the knife design and purpose, not necessarily its size. The one thing I do know is I don't like choils where when I use them, the corner of the edge bites into my finger.
