You can also do the same thing with a bundle of sticks tied together tightly.

This was the way I saw it done but the whole log set up could be awesome if you can get it split.

I've seen pictures of it that way too. They split the log into 4 pieces and built the fire in the middle.

I would guess so. I've never done a fire like that, only seen pictures of it.
