FAL's are OK, but I like the G3/91 platform better -- just feels more right to me.
PTR91 is a good rifle, can be found at a reasonable price, and they make a 7.62x39 carbine for those who prefer a short round.

What does one of those go for? I would have to get rid of some stuff to do anything but I am thinking more quality over quantity and a lot of the mil-surps can go so I really don't shoot them much!

Awesome rifles. For the price, I'd bump it up a notch and go custom bolt...but if you have a custom bolt...why not? http://www.laruetactical.com/predatobr-762-16inch

da da da...dang! Guys are gonna get Jeff filleted by his wife...she's got 7 months of hormonal madness to squeeze into 2!

Those CZ bolt carbines look sooo tempting (I'm becoming a big cz fanboy I think...but I think Max has me talked into an AR)

Get something sweet Jeff!

Great to hear you have a nice childcare set-up..that's huge. Family support is great...so I'm told!

You are right on the wife unit But I can deal with it. I deal with hs age girls and their hormones everyday at school

On the CZ rifles, they are one of my favorites but right now the dollar against the CZ is not what it used to be. I have a CZ 452 that is nuts accurate that hopefully I will get to pass on to my son some day if Frankentien Fienstein, Chuck the Schmuck Schummer, and Hillary Dillary Clinton don't get their way Back to the CZ I have had a 527 Carbine in 7.62x39mm, 527 Varmint in HS Kevlar, and a 550 in .22-250. All were great shooters, especially the 527 Varmint. I lusted after a .308 tactical they had at Sportsmans Warehouse before they left this part of the country, and now you really only can find the rimfires by CZ here. I still have a hankering for one of the Safari's in .375 H&H but that will be a definite wait

Or build one on a Mega upper/lower. The AR platform is more accurate but I've never met a .308 AR yet that had "The Feel" to it like the FAL. I'm probably just weird but if a gun or knife doesn't have "The Feel" it's not going to stick around my house very long.

Thought about it but I have very little spare time between work, wrestling season, renovating the house, and oh yeah a baby on the way. I have built a lot of firearms over the years like FALS, AKs, and assembled AR's. It was fun but those days of cheap kits are gone and I have my Para FAL to keep me happy. I just need to get a Para rear sight for the fixed lower that I have and then all I will have to do (hopefully if the ballistics work out right) is swap the bolt into the carrier, and add the lower and top cover then I am ready to rock a fixed stock 18" FAL. I love the FAL and it does feel right, but so does the AR platform

I have seen some awesome mega builds but I never really figured out where you buy the parts.

Before the Obama scare and Frankenstein Feinstien and Company scare you could get the parts from several places but right now there is not a lot out there at a reasonable price. I was talking to my buddy that is a LGS dealer here that is now one of the larger dealers in Oklahoma and he can't get anything. He sold over 200 ARs last week in various calibers except one--the Colt 901 he is holding for me. It i good to know a dealer before he is a dealer. In fact last week I started Christmas vacation on Wed. and worked for him on Wed afternoon through Sat. It was basically a down payment on the 901. Good thing I have a couple extra 20 rd Pmags sitting at home.............people are asking and getting a 200 bucks for them. There is not even a ban but people have gone insane. I can get by on 5 mags for now, or once I get the rifle. Hell I might even have enough other mags left over through the years to do some trading LOL.

I had a HK91, PTR 91, and a PTR 91K in the past when they were using the parts they bought from the Portugese gov't auction. Not bad rifles, but I never could totally get into the platform due to the lack of mounting an optic, etc. The FAL has a lot of the same short comings to it as the 91 so I stayed with what I already knew. Now that the AR is better suited for certain tasks and there is more support it feels right to me, or at least the Colt 901 does.

No arguing that the 91 can be said that it is robust, there are some countries in harsh environments that adopted the G3 for that reason. But lets look at it this way, the Germans wanted the FAL and the rights to manufacture it in Germany; but the Belgians said no--wonder why after two wars in the first half of the century. The German BGS used the FAL while the military went to Spain and got the rights to the CETME, and with a little work came up with the G3. HK was a product of the Belgians denying the Germans the ability to make the FAL in their own country.

lol!

I am tempted by that CZ carbine in 7.62- I love my 452 and the 7.62 round seems good for the northeast. Wifey has always been antigun and the Newtown shooting...knowing an aunt has made guns worse for her. I had her ready to accept a AR...that ain't looking so hot right now..let alone the availability issue.

RN, try talking to her about cars, alcohol, cigarettes and anything else that causes death BECAUSE OF HOW PEOPLE USE IT.

CZ's are very nice. I picked up a 454 locally about 13 years ago. First one the shop ever got in. $150 new in the box. Schnable fore end, tangent sight, the "hogs back" stock. My favorite .22. I'd love to have a .375 Safari also someday in the left hand flavor.

Rational conversation has left the building! I just checked out the biggest gun store in the area...omg...that place has been cleared out! Amazing...

Every plae I know of LGS, net, is out or gouging like crazy. The other day the news was interviewing a guy that was walking into a local show. He commented how his AR was a tool of death and decided to get rid of it--if he was so worried about someone getting hurt with it why was he selling it? Capitolism at its best, but wrong morally in my opinion.

well apparently everything with a pistol grip and collapsible stock is worth $2K and up now. and i guess every stripped lower is worth $300.

the cm901 has always looked like a good option to me. only part I wondered about was the pricing and availability of there upper adapter block. one of those things where if it's hard to ins they might cost as much as a new gun.

and i was hoping could find a 7.62x39 single shot but it seems they get discontinued pretty quickly. light primer strikes or something. may look AR some bolt options but will probably just go .308.

lazi, the block has me wondering too especially with the current political climate. I am sure if Colt won't release the block someone will manufacture one. The MSRP for a 6920 upper, adapter, buffer and spring is supposed to be at 675. Hopefully that price is right considering the buffer and upper.

As to the 7.62x39mm bolt rifle, Wolff spring would help the light strikes or reload and use commercial primers since they are softer.
