Great pics, great thread. You have got some serious feather-stickin' skills.

I can't remember who it was, but with larger blades they would hold the knife still and pull the wood to make the feather stick. Said it was a lot easier and I can see that it would be, plus also adding a lot more control to the depth of the cut.

I forget who it was also, but I tried it. I stabbed the blade into a log and held the handle and drug the stick across the blade. Worked like a charm. Wish I could remember who to thank. It was some good dog.

Way to beat the new off of that! Those look like some serious chunks of wood the 1311 was removing quickly...nice!

I had to read this post a couple times, just to make sure <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

That is an excellent technique for large blades (and is also how a fero rod should be used with a big blade), but that's not how I do it. I just do it "regular", where the stick is held vertical and the blade is moved down.

There are lots of ways to do feather sticks, and my way isn't necessarily the best, and I'm no expert bushcrafter.....but with that said....
I do have some tips in regard to feather sticks and I might make it its own thread if people are interested. If not, that's fine too...lots of people already know how to do this stuff.....

One thing I will say here about how fine I made the feather sticks on my second outing is that when they are that fine they light with a fero rod very easy. In other words, they don't always need to be that fine to get the job done, unless you want to use a fero rod with them.
