SF45ACP shoots stick bows at deer with success. He uses cedars with two bladers glued on.

I TRY to shoot stick bows at times. I use carbons with feathers and screw-in mechanicals.

Are we talking primitive or traditional here? I shoot a Bear Kodiak Hunter, 1970 manufacturing. I will be using it this season and actually started lobbing arrows last night. I love trad. gear and if you want a great site, check out Stickbow.com.
I love using cedar arrows and when you make contact with a deer it's almost like your primitive ancestors are standing behind you nodding their heads with approval and admiration that you have broken the bonds from the modern hunter.

Primitive bow is what I was talking about. I stopped by the local archery shop yesterday and took a look at some of the traditional bows they had. I kinda like the idea of the takedown one I saw, should be easy to store in a pack while out and about. Always have it if needed. Make a quiver to hold a few arrows on the side of my pack and it would always be there.

Back to the primitive, I am thinking that I will do ceder for now. Do you make yours or buy them?

I have bought in the past kits to where I cut the cedar down to length and glue the fletching on to the bow. This can be cheaper than buying arrows that have feathers.

The thing with primitive is that some bows will tend to shoot in away that can be jarring to the elbow over time. Bow shock can be a real issue when you start to fashion your own.

Just started shooting my recurve last week. Traditional archery is an art and very relaxing. When I have more time on my hands I'll go back to making my own bows.

Anyone use the 2 feather instead of the three feather?

I have a staff member who is very traditional (hunts with and competes with a mid 1700's black powder rifle and so forth) who has been encouraging me to "get into" archery. I've owned equipment in the past, but never devoted enough time to it.

My wife has expressed interest in a recurve so it could be something we'd do together.

The problem I face is...I know just as much about archery as I do about the surface of the moon.

I would suggest you start with a light draw weight its hard to get the fundamentals down when you are struggling to hold the bow at full draw.
